أعلن الشيخ يوسف القرضاوي رئيس الاتحاد العالمي لعلماء المسلمين إنه وعلماء آخرين أجازوا إنتاج فيلم عن الرسول محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم تنفذه هوليوود.
وأضاف أنه لا بد للمسلمين أن يفعلوا شيئا لتعريف غير المسلمين بحياة ورسالة الرسول الكريم وصحابته بعد تكرار الإساءة إليه وللمسلمين.
من جانبه أكد أحمد الهاشمي مدير مؤسسة النور القطرية، وهي إحدى الجهات الممولة للفيلم، أن ميزانية إنتاج مجموعة أفلام عن حياة الرسول والأنبياء عليه السلام بلغت مليار دولار، مشيرا إلى أنه يطمح أن تكون الأفضل، لإيصال الرسالة وتوضيح الإسلام لغير المسلمين.
وكانت مجموعة النور القابضة قد أعلنت عزمها عام 2009 إنتاج فيلم عن الرسول، وبدأت المشاورات مع أستوديوهات الإنتاج وشركات التوزيع في الولايات المتحدة وبريطانيا.

ومن أهم الأعمال السينمائية التي تناولت حياة الرسول الكريم وقصة الإسلام فيلم "الرسالة" للمخرج الراحل مصطفى العقاد، الذي أنتج عام 1977، وبلغت تكلفته 10 ملايين دولار، بينما حققت نسخته الإنجليزية فقط أرباحا بأضعاف هذا المبلغ.
